Midweek Modness: Studio Made Silver Bracelet
Studio made is a buzzword for something that is not mass-produced or made by a big jewellery house. I wish I could tell you the name of the artist that made this bracelet. It is unmarked save for the obviously handmade construction and ornamentation. The inside is rather roughly soldered, so I imagine that it is a student piece. I wish I knew who made so I could say “thank you, I like this very much.”
Here is a story I can tell you about the bracelet. I bought it from a dealer at the St. Lawrence market that I don’t remember seeing before — probably because jewellery is not his normal thing. He told me that he picked it up at an estate sale in High Park. The owner was a 97-year-old woman who collected, amongst other things, bijoux. She had so much that one bathroom had a tub that was full of jewels. Despite being stored in the bath, everything was relatively clean and well cared for. He also told me that she had been born in the house so until she decided to recently down-size, only one family had ever lived in it.
I gotta start scouring Craigslist for estate sales. I cannot get the image of a bathtub full of jewellery out of my head.
