Making Time

Paris Fashion Week has just concluded which reminded me of some accessories from Chanel’s resort collection a couple of seasons ago. Basically the models were dressed up with bangles illustrated with classic chain bracelets and watches. I never saw these pieces on sale so I thought I’d try making my own.

Step One was finding bangles for the base layer. It took a lot longer than expected to accrue these bracelets because they had to be colorful and inexpensive.

Step Two was deciding which watches to recreate. I scoured the internet for timepieces that were both graphic but also minimalist enough that I wouldn’t have to get too detailed with the drawing. Then I printed up some altered options and decoupaged them to the bangles with Modge Podge—the crafter’s best friend.

Step Three involved colouring in the collages watches. I used acrylic pens — the same kind favoured by vandals all over the world.

These are the prototypes. They didn’t work straight away so I redid the one on the right and gave them another coat of the old Modgy Podgy to make the surface look a little smoother.

Here they are in their finished form. Still a little crafty-looking. Next time I’ll try drawing them on freehand. And I shall try and find some slimmer spacer bangles to balance out the look.
