Souvenirs Of Vancouver

I was in Vancouver last weekend for the Vancouver Timepiece Show. It was a fantastic event and congrats to Jason Hutton for pulling it all together, Hutton is also the organizer of the Toronto Timepiece Show which I attended last fall. The idea behind these weekend-long watch fairs is to allow enthusiasts to examine independent watchmaker’s wares up close and also to meet the brains behind the brands.
They also allow for the opportunity to get a little shopping in. At the Toronto show I bought a fun Farr & Switt digital watch but I also had my eye on the Marathon (a venerable Canadian brand) field watch. I missed my chance to get one in Toronto and at the Worn & Wound Watch fair in New York. By gum, I wasn’t gonna let the chance pass me by again!

I also wasn’t gonna miss an opportunity to go thrifting—especially when there was a Salvation Army Thrift Store so close to the venue. No vintage watches to be found but I did get this branch coral necklace and mcm copper and enamel copper necklace.

The weekend was meant to be a joyous celebration of community. But it was also marked by the terrible Lapu Lapu Festival attack in which a man drove a car into the crowds at a Filipino street festival. 11 people were killed and many more injured. I thought about whether or not to sit out the last day of the Timepiece Show, but my friend Chris convinced me that being out in the light was better than letting the shadows take over. After the show, I met our niece Sabina and her wife Terka for a a drink to celebrate Terka’s becoming a Canadian citizen. After a lovely catch up, I passed a little jewelry kiosk where I impulsively picked up this sad girl heart ring to commemorate the short but sweet bit bittersweet trip.
