Victorian 9ct Gold Graduated Watch Chain

At the Waddington’s Jewellery Auction last Wednesday, I had my sights set on some dainty rings and a big ol’ lot of watches. It was the last lot of the evening, so luckily most of the bidders had left and/or seemed uninterested in a big box of watch bits.

I wanted it because it had two Enicar automatics that seemed to be in running order. There were also a couple of watch chains and mostly it’s always fun to spend a couple of hours rooting through a box of treasure. And this time there was treasure: I noticed that one of the watch chains, which I had assumed to be brass had little marks on every link.

Upon closer examination, I realized that the mark read 9CT. I gave the watch a little polish and the dull finish instantly gave way to a bright yellow colour. Yup, a huge gold chain. Half of me wants to make it into a bracelet, the other half wants to scrap it on go on a vacation, like those folks on the Harold the Jewellery Buyer ads.
