The Art of Style
Went on a Rust Belt road trip last weekend. One of our stops was the Detroit Institute of Arts Museum. It has an amazing collection of arts and applied arts, the standout of which is a mural by Diego Rivera. I was also inspired by the sketches, sculptures and portraits that featured accessories (because I am obsessed with jewels). So I took some detail snaps with the old iPhone. Unfortunately, I forgot to take notes of the names and artists.
I could totally picture myself wearing some of these looks. Indeed, I am sporting an orange turban in the selfie I posted yesterday and I am wearing a hematite bead necklace right now. And I have girandole earrings similar in spirit to the ones worn by the lady in the bust.
The image pictured above, left is from a Renaissance-era painting, but the stacking rings are totally on trend. In fact, when I was in New York earlier this month I was totally coveting my colleague Isabelle’s amazing bijoux from the Clay Pot in Brooklyn. The lady on the right has given me an idea about how to adorn myself with those tiny Victorian pins that I seem to collect but never wear.
And finally, two examples of adding some excess to pieces I already have. For example, I have hollow, hinged bracelets like the ones worn by the woman pictured above. I just never thought to wear one on each wrist. Balance! And while it’s not jewellery, I like the idea of wearing layered skirts and then offsetting the opulence with a simple sandal.
UPDATE: The media is reporting that the City of Detroit wants to sell of the assets of the DIA to help pay off its debts.
