Interview With A Blogger: Stefania Yarhi

I’ve tried to devise my own Proust Questionnaire and I’ve asked the lovely and talented Stefania Yarhi — the photographer/writer behind the blog Textstyles.ca to be my first victim.

Who are you and what do you do?
I’m a writer and photographer always seeking style and fashion. I worked in publishing for a couple years and my blog has been my creative platform for a year and a half now. Starting it was probably my best idea to date. It’s become my calling card and a way to open doors. Hallelujah internet.

When did you decide that the world of fashion was for you?

Fashion was always around me. My mom is a costume designer and I’d sit around set watching her and shopping with her for work. Needless to say I had the best Halloween costumes ever. Even as a kid fashion just drew me to it. A wearable art that is part of your everyday life is pretty encompassing.

Why did you start textstyles.ca?

I started textstyles.ca as a means to showcase my own work and play around creatively. I wasn’t finding what I wanted online in the way of Toronto-centric shots and content. The blog came about as a way for me to work towards a career in fashion essentially.

What is the textstyles.ca mission statement?

Textstyles.ca’s mission statement? Wow, that has changed since the onset… but, roughly a showcase for up-and-coming talent. My concept was always to make a big deal about people, things and projects that I felt deserving. I want to make noise and have Toronto be recognized for all its talent.

What is the most fun about textstyles.ca?
Creative power, no one tells me what to do or how to do it. I get to decide I approach each post the way I see fit and can explore different avenues whenever and however. It’s the freedom and liberty that I love.

What has been the most difficult part about running a blog?

The hardest part is defining your approach to the site. If it’s a personal project, an inspiration or work; you must define what you want and how you then do it. Somedays seems like no one is listening, or cares, which is discouraging. And then you get an email out of nowhere that changes everything.

Who is your style inspiration?
Style inspiration? Consistently Marion Cotillard, Garance Doré and French sailors.

You’re a world traveller — what is it about Toronto that inspires you?

Toronto is home.

Where is the best place to watch people in Toronto?

Kensington Market is the best people watching in town. It’s varies between hippie, street and high-fashion in the most colourful area.

What is your favourite fashion/beauty or design thing right now?

Well I just moved into my first adult—very Parisian—apartment and so design seems to be calling like a siren. I would love a Bauhaus chair. Oh and real Acne Atacoma wedges….

Thank you, Stefania! Here are your virtual dream shoes.
