I Wonder Where The Birdies Is? Victorian Aesthetic Era Sterling Dove Bar Pin
Picked up this wee bar pin at the St. Lawrence Antique Market last Sunday for two bucks. It has assay marks, but I can’t quite make them out. Next week, I’m going to try and take some photos of hallmarks with a microscope.
I’m fairly confident that it dates from around 1870-1889. Firstly, the design shows a Japanese influence, which was a result of the opening of trade between Great Britain and Japan in 1858. UK craftsman fell in love with naturalistic Japanese designs and simply copied them in their vernacular. Plus the popularity of heavy mourning jewellery began to give way to lighter, more whimsical fashions.
