Fix It Week: Connemara Marble Necklace

connemara marble shamrock necklace

A lot of Celtic jewellery is set with stones. In Scotland, they call it pebble jewellery and it it adorned with native agates. In Ireland, Connemara marble is the favoured rock. This pretty green stone is especially popular in souvenir pieces like this 1950s-era necklace. While it can be pretty, souvenirs aren’t always the most solidly built objects and the stones often fall out (see the “before” picture above, bottom left). Sometimes I can find replacements, but in this case, it was highly unlikely that I would come across a thin, heart-shaped piece of marble that would fit the setting. So once again it was Sugru to the rescue. This rubbery substance filled the space quite nicely and is holding well. I used yellow mixed with blue to create a swirly marble effect.

Again, if this was a rarer or more valuable piece, I’d make more of an effort to restore it to its original state. But I like the idea of making things wearable again. I am wearing this necklace as I type, even. It goes with a similar bracelet that I found a while back. I am all set for St. Patrick’s Day now.
