Tales of Woe Part 1

Art Deco Ruby RIng

The last couple times I have gone to jewellery auctions at Waddingtons, I have been outbid by a guy I call Captain Sweatpants who bids on every single lot until he runs out of money. Last week, he must have brought a whole lot of money, because he was also bidding things up past their estimates.

Now there was a couple of things I had my eye on, including a lot that contained two Edwardian padlock bracelets complete with key. I just can’t get enough of these bracelets but they are usually too tight for my wrists. But this set fit, I tells ya!

I figured the estimate on this lot was under priced and gave myself permission to bid a whole lot more money on it. Which is why my heart sank when I saw the Captain take his seat. So I gave myself permission to spend even more money so the lot would be mine. In the end he bid over $1,000 on a lot estimated to go for $100 to $200. He outbid me on my second choice and third choice lots as well. In the end, I spent too much money on this ruby cabochon ring. Captain S had already left by that point, but I still felt that I couldn’t go home empty-handed. It’s a great ring, but I am a chump.
