Midweek Modness: Abstract Sarah Coventry Choker

Sarah Coventry Modernist Choker

I found this crazy signed Sarah Coventry choker at the St. Lawrence Market a couple of Sundays ago. I just haven’t had a chance to write about it before now. And when I started writing about it I realized tat I’ve never written about Sarah Coventry before. Started in 1949, the company was to Jewellery what Tupperware is to plastic containers. The collections were sold at home jewelry parties until the company folded in the 1980s.

Sarah Coventry pieces were inexpensive but sturdy. Design-wise they were followers for sure, knocking off whatever look was popular at the moment. For example, this piece was no doubt paying tribute to Scandinavian style. But instead of having an enamelled copper or ceramic pendant, the cabochon hanging off this choker is plastic to keep all of the elements replicable and inexpensive.

The may have produced for the masses, but they weren’t afraid to attempt bold looks. In fact, Sarah Coventry would create a new collection for every season, which means that somewhere out there is a matching bracelet, brooch, ring and pair of earrings. I’m afraid I’ll be like Don Quixote looking for the different bits and pieces.
