Finding and Making Part 2: African Sculpture
Also at the Yard Sales this weekend, I found this gorgeous African statue for just $3. My initial Googling leads me to believe that it might maybe possibly be a Songye Nkisi or power figure because of the three antelope horns atop his head and that it looks like other Songye pieces that I saw on the interwebs. But the Nkisi usually have fetish details such as nails, actual horn and hide. It could also be a Luba carving.
Unfortunately his or her feet are broken.
On the weekend I also made this wood bead and tassel necklace. The beads have been stained a mahogany colour which sort of recalls the wood of the sculpture. It’s also a tip of the hat to the figure’s trade bead belt.
