Plastiques

I have a soft spot for man made materials. I can’t stop myself from collecting lucite, resin, Bakelite and acrylic jewelry. While I was preparing for yard sales this month, I came across boxes full of bangles. I half-heartedly tried to sell some pieces. I was glad when I didn’t.

I mean, look at these swirling and marbled bracelets! And the glowing bangles. I used to stack these bangles from wrist to elbow. But I also talk with my hands and they had a habit of flying off.

Finding this treasure trove only reignited my interest in plastic jewellery. Just today I picked up these items at the Value Village: a pink moonglow bangle; a West German daisy brooch; a marbled acrylic long chain; and a cicada encased in resin.

I later switched the cicada onto the plastic necklace. Didn’t get a picture yet, but you can visualize it.

Whatever material the brooch is is semi translucent so it just glows! As you know, the West Germany stamp means that it was produced before the wall came down.

Speaking of insects and resin, here’s a cute pendant I got from my friend Marla at yard sale number one. It’s an image of ladybugs (not real ones) built up in layers. Sometimes I think I would like to make resin art and jewelry but as much as I like vintage plastic, I shouldn’t be bringing any more of it into the world.
