Catching Up

So much has happened since my last post that I don’t know where to begin and what to talk about. So how about a little review of a new to me thrift shop called Global Thrift at Eglinton and Keele that I visited and the clothes that I did and didn’t get. Pictured above is me, a childless cat lady, wearing a vintage tshirt with a feline’s face on it. I googled the team. It’s a school and their mascot is a bobcat.

This sweater is by Koret, an American company that was originally called Koret of California until they got bought out by Levi Strauss in the 1990s. I would date this piece to that period.

This location of Global Thrift is a good sized shop. Not stuffed the gills so sorting through the racks was less messy and claustrophobic than, say, a Value Village. Mostly clothes although there were some toys. No furniture.

The prices were reasonable but not super bargains. The T-shirt and Korey sweater were about $5. This Eileen Fisher long sleeve was about $7. The things I did not buy were in the $12 to $20 range. Which is why I did not buy them. I can never walk away from Eileen Fisher (or stripey things) though.

Now for the things I didn’t buy. I would say have of the stock was fast fashion, the store had a decent amount of true vintage pieces like this 1970s dress. It was too polyester for me and I didn’t think I could pull it off silhouette-wise.

This atomic age dress isn’t technically vintage but it has that 1950s look and the fabric is based on the designs of legendary animation artist Mary Blair (she designed the Disney ride It’s A Small World and characters for Cinderella). The dress fit me but that kind of retro look doesn’t really suit me (although it would be perfect for my friends Allison or Becky.

This made-in-Italy shearling jacket was so soft and supple and would totally fit my vibe but even with its deconstructed cut it was too small. Grrrrrr.

I stumbled across this shop by accident. I had to vacate my place for a few hours and I needed to get some dollar store stationery supplies. For a lark I thought I woul hit up Dollar Tree instead of Dollarama. When I got there, the space formerly occupied by Dollar Tree was now a thrift shop. I am trying not to buy clothes. I’ve been telling you this for over 10 years now. But I had a vision of repurposing a flannel shirt into a short sleeved cropped jacket. The first thing I spotted was this Y2K dream coat already chopped! It was denim not flannel and it was embroidered with nonsense words. But I just recently got an awesome upcycked tie-front jacket from Courage My Love and a chambray shirt dress from Value Village so I couldn’t justify another denim purchase. But I’m still kind of entertaining a return to the store to see if this quirky coat is still there.
