Semi Me Made

Sometimes I miss the deep COVID stay-at-home days because I got so much done. I made clothes, produced art, and designed my own jewelry. It was a golden age of couch-based crafting and when we returned to socializing I still had so many unfinished projects sitting in bags and boxes around the house.

Luckily for me I broke my big toe and found myself home bound for a week. This gave me the opportunity to do some DIY. My favourite is this leopard-print skirt made from two pillow cases I had lying around. The pattern is doing all the heavy lifting here, but because I sewed everything by hand, it still took some time to complete. In fact I started wearing it out of the house before I finished the seams — that’s how excited I was to wear it!

A concept that I’ve been working on much longer was to make marabou feather trimmed slap bracelets. The idea was to be able to add glamourous cuffs to any outfit in an instant. It took me a while to source the feathers (which I eventually expropriated from a Club Monaco skirt I found at Value Village). Then it was another minute before I found the right slap bracelets (I used bike reflectors from Dollarama). Deconstructing the skirt and sewing with feathers proved more difficult than I expected. It might have been simpler to just add the trim to a dedicated pair of trousers or a jacket cuff using just snaps.

I still have plenty of feather trim and these pants might be the right candidate for embellishment. A neighbour had put a box of free fabric out on the sidewalk. Amongst the leftover material were two unfinished garments. These pants were missing a waistband and the cuffs were unhemmed. Plus there were two tiny slashes in the seat. I added elastic and darned the holes. Hand finishing with knit fabric also takes a lot of time. But so does healing a broken toe.

One more thing from the unfinished files: this jumpsuit was also in the abandoned sewing project bag. In this case, the neckline is undone. I still have to figure out how to finish it. Should I add some embellishment or just make it look more polished. Right now I’m getting a Sally O’Malley Halloween costume vibe so I can see adding some ruffles and a white elastic belt.
