Thrift Trip

I went to Pennsylvania for work last weekend. I gave a presentation on the history of women and watchmaking at the National Association of Watch and Clock Collector’s annual convention. It was in York Pennsylvania so I flew into Newark, New Jersey where I met my friend Chris and we drove to the conference together. Luckily, Chris loves a good vintage hunt as much as I do so we stopped off at few thrift shops and yard sales along the way. Here are my finds (I got a lot of vintage watches as well but I’ll save them for a second post).

We went to an old school church charity shop. It was filled with Vera Bradley bags. I nabbed a tiered Who What Wear skirt from their old Target collection. I really loved that collab and try to pick up any examples when I see them. Alas, this skirt is too small. I will list it on Poshmark.

And I bought two silk scarves.

Next stop was the Salvation Army Thrift. I got this amazing made in Italy, cotton square which I wore all weekend (that’s why it is so wrinkly). I also got a new old stock Herschel weekender to help carry all of my scarves home in.

We hit up a few yard sales. If I wasn’t flying I would have scored so many amazing lamps, mantels and hand carved clock cases. But I still picked up a comfy L.L. Bean flannel (too hot to wear though).

I also got this cute pot metal and marcasite monogram brooch. My name is Clarice Loretta Lublin now.

One observation, for the most part thrift shop prices were a little on the high side (and that’s not counting the exchange rate), but yard sale things were outrageous inexpensive: the shirt was $1 and the pin 50 cents.

We did stop into a consignment shop that seemed to fall in between these two pricing poles. Here a found a great 1990s NASCAR Ricky Rudd crew jacket for $15. Fun fact: I worked on a NASCAR trivia game but have no momento from this time. So maybe I’ll keep the jacket as a souvenir. Or maybe I’ll flip it for money. Right now it’s too hot to wear but also too hot to take pictures of things to sell.
