Vintage Goals

I haven’t done much thrifting thus far this month. But here are some things that I have found, starting with this vintage vest. A long time ago, when I still bought the print version of the Sunday New York Times, they featured a French Jazz musician on the cover of the Men’s style supplement and he was wearing a fair isle vest with Mickey Mouse embroidered on the front. I have long searched for such a sleeveless sweater so that I could make my own version. I’ve also been scouring the internet to find the original image so I could post it with this story, but no luck.

I also love these vintage Italian wool thermal Tshirts. In the 1990s, I used to buy them from the SAS Mart in Kensington Market — a shop that seemingly stopped buying new inventory in 1976. So when they turn up second hand (which is rarely) I always buy them.

Another ongoing fashion project I have is replicating the costume of the main character of an SNL short video called “Monika Does the Sloppy Swish.” In it, the titular character wears a dashiki, a pair of Adidas track pants, a pair of Tevas, a bum bag, and a messy top knot. I thrifted the Adidas about four years ago but I’ve never found a dashiki that fits well and is also not polyester — until now. Know I just have to perfect my sloppy swish dance.

And finally I found this reversible Peruvian poncho an earlier this summer but it’s been too hot to wear. It’s giving spaghetti western vibes for sure. Here I’m wearing it over a Moroccan caftan, but isn’t a poncho the muu muu of over garments?
