Wristwatch Update

Got a few new watches recently (I also sold a few too). Thought I’d better immortalize them on the old blog. Let’s start with this Farr & Swit Mixtape Volume 2 that I bought at the Toronto Timepiece Show. I got the Volume 1 at last year’s event. These digital timepieces are so much fun but the micro brand has so many cooler watches available. You should check them out.

When I was on my way to the Toronto Timepiece Show, I stopped in at the Value Village where I picked up this counterfeit Mickey Mouse watch with a funny mystery disc that animates a series of “diamonds” around the dial as well as a starburst second hand. It is signed Orbit Virgin Islands on the back. The strap was pooched but I had a spare plaid new old stock option in my project box.

Speaking of projects, I found this Met Museum watch in a bag of broken jewelry from the Value Village. It is based on a clock design by Gilbert Rhode for Herman Miller. Sometimes the watches in these scrap bags are just wanting a battery, but this one wouldn’t start ticking again.

One of the reasons I liked the Gilbert Rhode watch so much was that the dial design reminded me of the So Labs Layer 1.3–a design I failed to get my hands on when it first launched a couple of years ago. Last week I finally managed to acquire one from my friend Matt.

And last but not least, I also got this working windup Timex in the same bag of broken jewelry as the Rhode watch. The flying saucer case has an almost bronze like tarnish (though it’s probably only a gold wash wearing off the stainless steel. And the faux reptile strap is also cool. It feels like something Disco Stu would wear.
