Bra Story

Buying bras is hard for a bosomy girl such as myself. First of all they are expensive. Secondly, I’m kind of picky — I hate underwires and I hate brassieres with those little cutlets stuck into pockets that constantly shift around. I also want to support women-run, Canadian businesses.

A couple of years ago I bought two sport bras from an outfit called Shapermint which are still holding up but because of their full coverage design don’t work under every thing. I wanted something a little more scrappy and ordered something more structural online from a Vancouver-based company called Understance. They are super comfy, but I didn’t do the measurements correctly so they are a little baggy in the cups, if you know what I mean, which isn’t a great look under sweaters.

So I put getting a properly bra fitting on my to do list (along with skin tag removal). In the summer, Understance opened a brick and mortar shop on Bloor Street West. I did not act on the opportunity to get a fitting because either the shop was closed or my budget was too tight. Then I got an email saying that the company was closing its physical boutiques by December 1 and that it would no longer be doing in-person fittings. Today, however, I was in the neighbourhood and decided to stop in. Not only was everything heavily discounted, they let me things on. Stock was pretty limited but I did get two bras for $30 bucks. And they did do a fitting in case I wanted to order online.

PS. I just went to the Understance and it would appear that everything thing there is deeply discounted and final sale. This does not bode well. If you want to support the girls in more ways than one, I would suggest checking them out online.
