That’s So Sherman!
I’ve written about influential Canadian Studio jewellers such as Robert Larin and De Passillé-Sylvestre before. But The Great White North was also home to many great costume jewellery designers.
Probably the best-known and most collectible of these designers is Montreal’s Gustave Sherman. Active from 1947 to 1981, Sherman produced quality rhinestone pieces. He used stones specially developed for his company and each and every stone was prong-set, never glued. Basically, some of his pieces are more painstakingly crafted than a lot of fine jewellery — and that’s maybe why it’s so collectible today!
The set pictured above belonged to my friend Lynda’s aunt. And it was still in its original box!
