Staying Cool

July was unacceptably hot. I suspect it might have something to do with climate change. I am doing my best to not kill the planet by limiting energy use by staying in my un air conditioned bedroom with the lights out. Basically keeping deists hours. This also prevents any kind of sweat inducing activity. I did purchase a few things to help me keep my cool last month. The first was the silky caftan pictured above. I wish I could rationalize buying anything new when over consumption is a main driver of the current environmental crisis, but I can only say that it was from a small import boutique so at least I was supporting a local independent business.

I took the above selfie at Muji, not a local business. I went there to buy a new desk fan because the one I salvaged from the sidewalk a couple of years ago finally gave up the ghost. It is nice looking and quiet and doesn’t take up as much room as the old tower fan and while not as powerful it gets the job done.

Since I was at Muji anyway, I picked up a few linen neck scarves with little pockets sewn in so you can place an ice pack in and tie it around your neck to keep cool. I already had two of these in Navy Blue but I got two more in lavender so I can accessorize them with more outfits. I swear I wouldn’t be able to sleep in this heat without them.

And finally, I was visiting my mom and planned to go swimming. I keep a bathing suit at her apartment just for such occasions. I haven’t actually gone for a dip in her apartment’s pool in a few years and was chagrined to discover that my swimming costume no longer fit, so I went to Old Navy to get a new two piece. Luckily all the summer stuff was already on sale. Unluckily, my mom couldn’t find the key to the building pool, so pool time didn’t happen that day. I have worn it twice since. Swimming is my favourite thing.
