Here’s the latest addition to my Mexican folk pottery menagerie: A ginormous barro pintado or painted clay toucan that I found at the Salvation Army on Saturday for $4. It is signed W.C. 1994 Mexico.
This differs from my Tonola birds in that the piece is not glazed. Rather it is painted with Acrylics directly on the fired clay. The motifs are similar, but the colour is much more vibrant. Unfortunately. the paint has a tendency to flake off with this method (there are a few missing spots from when I took the price tag off). But still it’s a beauty.
