Incoming: Metal Arts Guild 2067 – Crafting the Future
For their annual juried exhibition, the Metal Arts Guild of Canada has asked its members to look into their crystal balls and ponder what design will look like 60 years from now. The resulting show, Metal Arts Guild 2067 – Crafting the Future, is an intriguing collection of speculative fictions cast in jewellery, tablewares and sculpture.
The guild developed five possible scenarios of Canada in 2067. The metal artists then created works based on two of those possible futures. Entries were judged on craftsmanship, design and responsiveness to the theme.
I don’t have any images from the exhibition, so to illustrate lets go back to the future of fashion from 1977, Carrie Fischer as Princess Leia from Star Wars Episode IV – A New Hope . She is wearing a necklace called “Planetaariset Laaksot (Planetary Valleys)” by Finnish Björn Weckström for Lapponia. And this necklace was featured in the Metal Arts Guild’s 2005 show The Northern Lights Exhibition Featuring Björn Weckström. The circle is now complete.
