Hat Week: Straw Bonnet

Vintage 1940s Straw Bonnet

The spring sun is poking out and my fancy turns from toques to shady chapeaux. They mostly hang on the wall as decoration as I have a giant melon and most headgear doesn’t fit me. Plus, it’s hard to wear a hat and glasses at the same time.

Which is why the straw bonnet pictured here is the perfect hat for me. It perches on the head and stays put thanks to a ribbon, so circumference doesn’t matter. And the brim is huge, to keep my highly flammable skin safe from the sun. I don’t know how old this hat is, but it reminds me of late ’40s, early ’50s New Look style.
