Happy 75th Anniversary Lucite!

The plastic known as Lucite celebrates it’s 75th birthday this year. This clear thermoplastic (meaning it can be shaped) is also known as Perspex, Plexiglass or Acrylic Glass.

One of the first jewelleries I ever made was in grade 7 shop glass. We glued different-coloured sheets of plexiglass together, then sanded them down into a shape, drilled a hole through it and voila — a hideous pendant was born.

Other amateur jewellery makers have had much better luck. A 1947 guide to at-home plastic carving for fun and profit (reproduced at the incredibly amazing resource that is Morning Glory Antiques) also demonstrates techniques for making floral brooches and bangles. The reverse-carved lucite earrings pictured above most likely date from this era.
