Sidewalk Find: Laurel Burch Dragonfly Earrings
I found these Laurel Burch earrings in a “Free” box on the sidewalk when I was coming home from doing my laundry on Saturday. Burch got started making jewelry out of metal she found in junkyards. She sold her wares on the streets of San Francisco to support her kids. She was discovered by a businessman named Shashi Singapuri, who took her to China in 1971. There she discovered cloisonné and colourful enamel work soon became her hallmark.
She also painted and produced silk scarves and totes. I remember these deisgns being popular in the ’80s. Although Burch died in 2007, her work is still produced and she has a loyal base of collectors for her vintage stuff.
