Style Icon: Mélanie Laurent

I’ve been under the weather all weekend and as a result have spent a good deal of time on the couch watching movies. I finally got around to viewing Beginners, starring Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer and Mélanie Laurent. I loved her easy Left Bank look in this movie. I don’t know if it’s the fever talking, but I think that with a few tweaks, I can pull off this style.

In a real fever fueled act, I went online and ordered a bunch of clothes from Old Navy on Thursday night. I hadn’t seen the movie yet, but I think these unstructured sweaters and sheer, tie neck blouse have a Gallic sensibility.

I like the slightly androgynous look of Laurent’s character’s wardrobe. It had a modern Annie Hall appeal. Above left and right are two more online purchase from the ON. In the middle, some grey trousers from the Gap outlet at the Dufferin Mall.

As my figure is pretty unstructured right now, I need a a tailored jacket to pull it all together. I got this peplumed jersey blazer by Sandro a month or so ago at Winners. And don’t forget accessories: Above middle and right are a vintage yellow leather drawstring purse that I’ve had for years and sueded desert wedges from Old Navy (that’s the end of it, I swear — although can I mention that I ordered these things Thursday and they arrived Sunday morning?)

And finally, some simple jewels. Pictured above: a vintage Danecraft sterling sand dolllar pendant, a 9ct gold wedding band dated 1906, and a 1950s-era Longines Watch.
