Midweek Modness: Yaad Israel Copper Utensils
I found these cool copper utensils at the St. Lawrence Antique Market last week. I love the Paul Klee like designs — clearly these tools were made for decorative purposes only. On the back, they are stamped “Yaad Made in Israel.” A little Googling tells me that Yaad was founded in the ’50s by Jerusalem artists Bezalel and Zahara Schatz. This brother and sister pair embraced European modernism and American Jazziness (they used to pal around with Henry Miller and provided illustrations for many editions of his books).
Their father Boris founded the Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts in Jerusalem. Bezalel’s Canadian-born wife Louise also created designs for Yaad.
All in all, not a bad score for $5.
