Yves Saint Laurent Opium Perfume Necklace

YSL Opium Perfume Necklace

Last week I was walking around and saw a hipster girl wearing an 1980s-era Yves Saint Laurent Opium necklace. I was so jealous that I started to think about it all the time to will said necklace into my life. And lo and behold, yesterday at the St. Lawrence Antique Market, I found one for $1.

When Opium was launched in 1977, the bottle was created architect-turned-bottle designer Pierre Dinand to resemble a Japanese inro or laquered carrying case. This necklace is a riff on the original bottle design and would have housed a miniature bottle of the spicy oriental fragrance.

Not that this necklace is super rare or anything. Originally, the pendant would hold a tiny bottle of Opium. This one is missing it’s perfume, but that heady scent always made me dizzy anyway. I can use it to keep my TTC tokens in.
