New Faces of April
A couple weeks back, I traded in some old jewels for a newish one — a lava cameo depicting Flora set in a modernist style silver ring. Ever since I found that hard stone cameo last fall, My interest in cameos has been rekindled.
I’m especially interested in learning about different materials used in making cameos — like this lava cameo. Lava cameos are carved from volcanic rock — the most popular source being Mount Vesuvius in Italy. The colours range from white, beige colors through reddish tones, and black.
I’m also curious about cameo themes. Classical motifs are particularly popular. This ring depicts Flora, the Roman goddess of spring and flowers.
And finally, as a fashion thing, I like the idea of big cameos. I want to wear lacy cravats pinned at the throat by an oversized cameo like the one pictured above, which I won in a lot on eBay a couple of weeks ago.It is about two inches long.
