Plastic Week: Leather Purse, Synthetic Handles
To me, one of the attractions of vintage plastics is the joy designers took in pairing natural and unnatural materials. I don’t think they over thought it or anything — plastic, leather and metal were all just another colour on their palette. Take this mid-1960s-era purse for example. First of all, check out the label pictured below. It states that the purse was “Hand Made in Canada by John Hart,” which emphasizes traditional leather craft. But then it’s got a picture of Toronto City Hall, which was as futuristic as all get out in 1965.
I’m not sure what my point is.
