RIP Louise Bourgeois
Louise Bourgeois, the French-born American abstract expressionist sculptor died yesterday in New York at the age of 98. An artist her whole life, she only came to prominence in her 70s. Her work dealt with themes of nature and her style was very organic but Bourgeois was no Earth Mother type. Just check out the Robert Mapplethorpe portrait pictured above. This is what I want to look like when I’m 70s.
Her best known pieces are big creepy spiders commissioned for public spaces (there’s one at the National Art Gallery in Ottawa).
