Cat and Hat Week: Straw Boater

AT some point when I was taking pictures, the cat decided he wanted to be internet famous. Or maybe he just wanted to wear a straw boater hat. Also known as a skimmer or a basher, the hats originated in the late 1800s, reached peak popularity in the Edwardian era, and then became relegated to the uniform of barbershop quartets and British Public school boys. This hat, made of stiff, braided straw and trimmed with a grosgrain ribbon, probably belonged to the latter.
