Midweek Modness: California Pottery Elzac Style Copper and Ceramic Brooch
This brooch, while unmarked, is definitely in the same style as Elzac. Due to rationing of materials during World War II, young artists in California started making jewellery out of more unusual materials such as ceramics, lucite and copper. Most of these pieces were unsigned, so I can’t tell you who with absolute certainty who manufactured this piece, but I can tell you that this kind of jewellery had a very short heyday — from 1942 to 1945, to be specific. But the idea using unconventional media and motifs freed up the generation of jewellery designers that followed.
