Freebie Friday: Gifts From My Mother-In-Law

opal ring

The last couple of months, nay years have been hard on my family. My father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s, my mom had knee surgery and now is having some major health problems of her own that affect her ability to take care of my dad. My sisters and I have stepped in as much as we can to support them and I am glad to have this time to hang out and learn from them. But sometimes the extended trips out of town can be hard.

So I’d like to take a minute to recognize the support of my other family, the Kines’, who never fail to ask how my parents are doing and who have helped keep my spirits up. Especially Mr. Andrew who is of course my rock and anchor and everything that is good in the world. I also want to thank my mother-in-law Valerie, who took me out for a girls’ adventure on a rainy day after a trip to Kitchener. As long as I’ve known her, she is always full of surprises, including this sweet silver and opal ring that she gave me from her own jewellery box about a decade ago. She is unsure of its origins, but based on the setting I’m thinking turn of the 20th century Austro-Hungarian.
