Midweek Modness: 1950s Bookcase

1950/ cantilevered leg bookcase

I spotted this cool, cantilevered leg bookshelf on the sidewalk on Bloor Street between Lansdowne and Dundas Street West. At first I was like, no, I can’t bring another piece of furniture into the house. So I kept on walking. And then I thought, you can only take it if you carry it home and you still have to go to the supermarket.

So that’s what I did. I walked 15 minutes to the No Frills, walked around the shop with a bookshelf slung over my shoulder and then juggled it with two bags full of groceries for two more blocks.

It was worth it though. It fits nicely in a space between the kitchen and the nook that currently houses the chaise lounge. And it provides much needed housing for books (we were able to unpack three more boxes).

It needs some work: it’s plywood that had been stained with an oil-based stain and then somebody painted over that with black acrylic, so the finish is somewhat curdled. And they must have run out of paint because one of the legs is still brown. I would like to strip it to it’s original, lighter finish I think.

Refinishing projects are going to have until spring though.
