Midweek Modness: Tubular Chairs
I found this Marr Stam cantilever arm chair knock off on the sidewalk. The real thing wwas first produced by Bauhaus back in 1926. Stam had been working with tubing (he wasn’t alone — their was a three way law suit over who really invented this design). And the original prototype used heavier gas pipes and joints.
But the truly revolutionary aspect of this chair was that it did not have to sit on four legs. It was a bit of a fluke because Stam’s motivation was purely aesthetic. His engineering achievements were just a means to create a clear and clean form.
