Unique New York

blog bezel set 2Three stories.

One. I’ve long longed for Anna Wintour’s collection of coloured gemstone riviere necklaces. I am not alone. At one time I had various paste versions of Wintour’s Georgian neck pieces, but sold them when economic circumstances required it. I thought it would be just as easy to refill my jewellery box when I was flush again but I was, these jewels were now priced out of my range (except for this necklace that I bought on eBay.

Two. I’ve always wanted an Art Deco era  Pool of Light Necklace. I have never found one that I could afford.

Three. I was in New York City a few weeks ago, on my way to a meeting, when I came across a cool cabinet of curiosity called Thrift & New in Midtown Manhattan. It has all kinds of cool second-hand accessories (and books, china and other bits and pieces.

In one of the cases was a necklace made of bezel-set amethyst. At first I thought it was a Pool of Light, but when the clerk pulled it out of the showcase so that I could have a look at it, I realized that the stones were faceted. I hemmed. I hawed. It’s not Edwardian  nor Edwardian (it definitely dates from after the 1980s) nor is it composed of crystal orbs. But I couldn’t walk away. And then she told me that she had a matching green amethyst bracelet.
